At 16 months, a young girl was diagnosed with global developmental delay (GDD) and severe sensory issues. By 18 months, she began to receive treatment with Chinese medicine. During her initial consultation, she exhibited signs of significant developmental delays: her hands and feet were unusually small for her age, and she appeared noticeably smaller than her peers.

She also showed minimal responsiveness to her environment, had limited interaction with others, and made only occasional sounds. Her severe tactile sensitivity was so evident that even her mother was sometimes unable to touch her hands. Eye contact was rare, and she seemed disengaged from those around her.

After starting Chinese medicine treatment, her sensory issues started to improve. Gradually, she became more interacting with her surroundings, responsive to stimuli without the overwhelming discomfort she had previously experienced. And she started walking and exploring the world with increasing curiosity.

During follow-up consultations, she even showed a keen interest in the conversations between her mother and the doctor. As time passed, she began to reach developmental milestones at her own pace. Her hands and feet started to grow. By 21 months, her height and weight had normalized. She weighed 11.9 kg (above the 50th percentile) and measured 83cm in height (around the 50th percentile), aligning with typical growth patterns for her age.

Now, at 21 months, this little girl is thriving. Her sensory sensitivity has significantly diminished, allowing her to enjoy new experiences and environments with ease.

For parents facing similar challenges, there is hope. Early intervention with Chinese medicine, alongside professional support and a nurturing environment, can make a profound difference. Celebrate every small victory, and remember that progress, though gradual, is always possible.
